Sizing depends on your household’s number of occupants and hot water usage:

• 1–2 people: 30–40 gallons
• 3–4 people: 40–50 gallons
• 5+ people: 50–80 gallons
  

Tankless water heaters are sized based on flow rate (gallons per minute) rather than tank capacity.

• Lower the thermostat to 120°F
• Insulate your water heater tank and hot water pipes
• Fix leaky faucets
• Install low-flow showerheads
• Schedule annual maintenance to remove sediment buildup

Typical maintenance includes:

• Flushing the tank once or twice a year to remove sediment
• Inspecting the anode rod every 2–3 years
• Checking the pressure relief valve
• Ensuring the venting system is clear (for gas models)
